Comedy took a huge hit yesterday with the passing of the hugely talented and vastly underrated Jan Hooks. She was best known for her exceptional work on Saturday Night Live with impressions of Tammy Faye Bakker, Kathy Lee & Nancy Regan, Designing Women (replacing Jean Smart), 3rd Rock From The Sun & more recently (sadly her last role) on 30 Rock as Verna, Jenna Maroney’s mother.
As a five year old that BEGGED to stay up late on Saturdays to watch SNL, I am massively saddened by this news. The Sweeney Sisters was the epitome of humor to my 5 year-old comedy pallet and frankly is still pretty fantastic. I often feel like Hooks gets left out the ‘Funny Women’ conversation – but in my opinion she was one of the funniest & most important woman to go through Saturday Night Live. She will be missed immeasurably.
I would also like to point out that I just watched the Church Chat sketch with Hooks playing Tammy Faye Bakker & Phil Hartman playing Jim Bakker and cried, so that’s normal, right?
