We announced not too long ago that Frank Grillo was being eyed for the Skyline spinoff film Beyond Skyline. Now Variety reports that his starring is pretty much a done deal and they’ve also announced a couple of additions to the cast. Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, stars of the uber-popular Raid: Redemption and Raid 2 will now be joining Grillo.
The film won’t be a direct sequel to the 2010 film, which is a small saving grace. Instead we will have a story taking place around the same time as the events in the first film. The film will center on a detective, played by Grillo, trying to rescue his son from an alien warship. Uwais, the star of both Raid films will play the leader of a band of resistance fighters that forms when the aliens appear. There is no word on what Ruhian’s role will be.
Intersting to point out is that Uwais and Ruhian have been signed on as fight coordinators for the film. Looking to “showcase a new kind of alien combat,” it only makes sense to go with the people behind some of the most batshit crazy fight scenes I’ve seen in years.
I’m a little worried that Grillo is starting to get typecast. He seems to be playing a lot of authority or law enforcement characters lately. If it gets him work it gets him work. I’d just like to see him branch out and try something a little different while he can. He’s much sought after right now so he should be able to pick and choose a little more freely.
Beyond Skyline will be helmed by rookie director Liam O’Donnell, who takes over from The Brothers Strause.
