There were rumors a while back that Sony was in talks with Marvel Studios to loan out the Spider-Man charcater, possibly for Captain America: Civil War, and that the character would stick around for a little while.
The recent info hack at Sony let us in on some of the inner workings as to exactly what Sony wanted out of this deal. And after looking at it I’m not afraid to say Sony would have come out of this better off than Marvel.
Emails between Spider-Man producer Matt Tolmach, SPE chief Amy PAscal and Colombia head of production Michael De Luca proposed many different routes to take the Web-slinger and his many villains. One route was to introduce him in Captain America: Civil War and have it be an all new Spider-Man. Yup, Bye-bye Andrew Garfield! From there we would launch into a new Spider-Man movie series without having to go with the Sinister Six, which is where we seemed to be headed after The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The deal never quite came together but it never totally fell apart either.
I advise you to take the following information with a huge grain of salt. A report today claims a reddit user who has a friend close to Disney is stating a deal is now in place for Spider-Man to appear in the Marvel Studios movies.
If it is at all legit, the user claims a meeting was recently held between Sony and Marvel that lasted about 40 minutes. The meeting is said to have gone over the “final kinks” of the deal they have been working on to “incorporate Spider-Man into the MCU.”
It’s said the meeting was short because the deal for Spider-Man is already in place, and they were “simply tending to other commodities.”
If the deal is in place, the earliest Marvel can now use Spider-Man possibly would be in a post-credit scene for The Avengers 2 or a cameo in Captain America 3.
According to the rumor, the deal is expected to be officially announced after next month’s “Spidey Summit,” and the “heavy favorite” to play Spider-Man is Logan Lerman!
Logan Lerman, known for the Percy Jackson movies and most recently Fury, was said to be up for the role of Spider-Man prior to Andrew Garfield & has expressed interest in playing the web slinger on the big screen. Lerman has commented on these rumors in the past saying: “There have been a few discussions, it’s definitely something I’m looking into. It’s [Spider-man] one of my favorite characters ever and I’m a huge fan of the series. I’d love to have more conversations about it. I’m definitely very interested in it.”
