Tim Burton recently spoke about Beetlejuice 2 with MTV while doing promotion for Big Eyes. The project has come up numerous times in the past but seems to be gaining traction. Keaton publicly stated earlier in the year that as long as Burton were involved he would reprise his role of “the ghost with the most”. As recently as October, Keaton mentioned that they were just waiting on a script.
When asked about whether or not he’d be returning to the project, Burton stated, “Oh yeah.”
When he was asked about the possibility of Winona Ryder returning to the role of Lydia Deets he continued his answer with, “Oh yeah, yeah yeah yeah. Oh yeah, oh yeah. Yeah yeah, oh yeah.” Then further elaborated by stating, “I worked with [Ryder], I hadn’t seen her in awhile… and she was so great,” Burton said. “I was so happy to see her. So those kinds of elements mean something to me. Michael, and her… and that character, I just miss it, there’s some freedom about that character that I love.”
I’ve been decidedly not into nearly everything Burton has done in recent years, but I would really be psyched to see him making a new Beetlejuice film starring Keaton and Ryder. All that’s left to be seen is whether of not Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis would also be returning. They’re less important to me, honestly.
As long as we get Burton directing Keaton, Ryder and some sandworms, my butt will be in a seat.
