Another major franchise has ended it’s search for a director. Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot just announced that Justin Lin will direct Star Trek 3, filling the biggest open directing assignment currently available. Lin has been credited with reviving the Fast & The Furious franchise, which grossed $1.7 billion in worldwide box office while he was behind the camera.

He replaces Robert Orci, who got that job after being involved as co-writer of the revamped Star Trek series. Orci had originally taken over for a departing JJ Abrams, who left to helm The Force Awakens, the first part in the upcoming Star Wars sequel trilogy for Disney.

A few weeks ago it was reported that Paramount had a list of directors in mind to replace Orci that included Lin, Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz) , Rupert Wyatt (The Gambler) , Daniel Espinosa (Child 44) and Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game). Paramount decided to go with Lin as he readily available & his sequel to The Bourne Legacy was postponed due to Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon wanting to do another Bourne movie, which Universal wants to come first before Lin’s.

No date has been set for the upcoming third film in the Star Trek saga but good word has it that the studio is looking for a 2016 release date to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the TV series.

Before he begins Star Trek 3, Lin will direct the first two episodes of the second season of HBO’s hit drama True Detective.
