Karl Urban is a hot commodity in Hollywood these days. He’s got the upcoming Star Trek 3 film where he plays ship physician Leonard “Bones” McCoy. Warner Bros is rumored to want him to play a role in either Aquaman or Suicide Squad. And now he’s joining the cast of the remake to the 1977 Disney classic Pete’s Dragon according to The Wrap.
Urban is taking over for a departing Michael C. Hall. Hall had to leave the film due to scheduling conflicts. No word yet as to what character the actor will be playing.
The film will be a departure from the original in that it will not be a musical. It will also not have an animated dragon; the titular charcter will be rendered using CGI. The remake aims to keep the core story, which revolves around a young boy whose parents die and is subsequently raised by the dragon in the woods.
Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard and Wes Bentley are already signed on to star alongside newcomer Oakes Fegley, who plays the young boy.
Pete’s Dragon will be directed by David Lowery from a script that he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks.
