The upcoming fifth installment of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, subtitled Dead Men Tell No Tales, has begun production in Australia and on top of adding a new, high profile cast member, we now know what the premise of the film will be about.
First things first: the new mate on board the ship. Rosewater and Exodus: Gods and Kings actress Golshifteh Farahani will join the crew. She joins star Johnny Depp and franchise newcomers Javier Bardem. Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario. Returning for another trip are Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs.
The film centers on Capt. Jack Sparrow (Depp) and his ever increasing bad luck. That bad luck gets even worse when ghost pirates, led by Sparrow’s deadly enemy Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle intent on killing every pirate that sails the high seas.
The only way for Jack to stop this terrifying spectral menace is to somehow locate the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful and elusive artifact that bestows upon its owner total control over the seas.
All this talk of ghost pirates makes me think of bad Scooby-Doo villains, but I believe in the power of Javier Bardem to make this a badass bad guy, hopefully in the vein of what he did in Skyfall and No Country for Old Men. I’m not saying the next Pirates movie is going to be award winning cinema, but Bardem can make this character more than just a two-dimensional cookie-cutter antagonist.
While we know what roles Thwaites and Scodealrio will be playing, Farahani’s role has yet to be dislcosed. It would be shocking if Disney signed her and made a big deal about adding her in with all the other major cast members to only use her sparingly. Hopefully some details regarding her part will be disclosed soon.
The film, directed by the team of Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning, is set to sail into theaters July 7, 2017.
