The always amazing Kellvin Chavez over at Latino Review has revealed a LOT of new details concerning Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man film.

The film will likely be titled The Spectacular Spider-Man and will be written and directed by none other than Drew Goddard.

Goddard has been involved in some big geek properties over the years, beginning with the small screen writing for Buffy, Angel, Alias, Lost and recently a couple of episodes of Marvel’s upcoming Daredevil Netflix series. You’ll recall he was onboard as the Daredevil show runner prior to swinging over to the Spidey-verse for Sinister Six. (LR’s report states that The Sinister Six will still likely appear in the film, with an eye toward possibly spinning them off into their own film at some point down the road.) Goddard also has some big screen chops, writing World War Z, Ridley Scott’s upcoming The Martian as well as the excellent Cabin in the Woods (co-written by Joss Whedon) which he also directed.

Speak of that planned spidey-verse, it seems that (unsurprisingly) all of the planned spinoffs (including Aunt May as a spy) will all likely go away. Thank god!

The report also states that there will be a new actor, likely an unknown, who “will be specifically based in High School and they want him to be able to grow up into the role. The thought being if this works, Spidey can do multiple trilogies for years ala Harry Potter.” There will not be an origin story this time around. “Spidey exists from the beginning, taken as a given.” I don’t know about you, but I’m more than happy to avoid another Spider-Man origin.

It was also reported that a “major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the “audition” to join the Avengers.”

I honestly don’t know what to think about this. I know it’s early, but if all of this is true, it sounds like it’s going to be a mess. The Sinister Six AND Spider-Man fighting Iron Man then auditioning for the Avengers?

Hopefully they have their shit a little more together behind the scenes than this sounds. I love Goddard as the writer-director, hopefully he can untangle all of this and put out the Spider-Man film we all want to see.
