Kevin Smith to Stink Palm Audiences Again With ‘Mallrats 2’

by: S. Scott Stanikmas

I’m a huge Kevin Smith fan. Even when he swings and misses, like with Tusk, I just put it in the rearview mirror and look ahead to the next project from the writer/director. With his latest tweet it looks like he may be swinging for the fences with something near and dear to my heart.

This past Thursday, Smith tweeted his filming schedule. The plan shows he does not intend to stop anytime soon. He’s got Clerks III, Hit Somebody, Moose Jaws, Mallrats 2…wait, what!?!?! Mallrats 2!!

The tweet was worded as follows:

We shoot CLERKS III in May. HIT SOMEBODY shoots September to Christmas. Then in Feb 2016, we do MOOSE JAWS. But after that? I smell a rat…

I’m a huge Mallrats fan. I remember watching it on VHS until my tape broke. When I got the DVD I must have watched it at least once a week for a year straight. I don’t know which version I enjoy watching more – the regular movie or with the commentary on (2 hours of them ripping on Ben Affleck with Affleck himself laughing along is just perfect).

Sure the original film was a flop in theaters, but it found its audience in the comfort of their own homes. Would a sequel play better in theaters now that Smith is a known commodity? Or would the second installment fizzle like a sparkler at a Fourth of July sale?

I’d like to think that the world is ready for Mallrats 2. Kevin Smith might just be fishing to see what his fans would say when he proposed the idea. He had to know that by using the word “rat” that we’d all jump to the obvious conclusion.

But I’m ready for a return trip to Eden Prairie…how about you?
