Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to star and produce in a feature film version of the hit 80’s children’s show Fraggle Rock according to Variety.
The Dark Knight Rises star is a huge fan of the works of Jim Henson, creator of the Fraggles, and his involvement really takes this property up another notch or two. Until this news, the development of this project has been stagnant since being announced in 2011.
“The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on ‘Sesame Street,’ and then on ‘Fraggle Rock,’” Gordon-Levitt said. “Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved.”
It’s always good to know that someone who truly appreciates the work will have a hand in molding the final product.
As readers of Indie Revolver already know, I loved the Fraggles growing up. I reported on the sad news of Gerry “Doc” Parkes passing last year and I couldn’t help but think that this was something I wanted to introduce my nephew to when he got to be of an age to appreciate the silliness and fun of it.
No word on who Gordon-Levitt will play, but if I can fantasy cast, I’d love to see him play the son of the original Doc. Whatever role he plays, i have faith that he’ll do the characters and spirit of the show justice.
