Fans had better enjoy it while they can. Jennifer Lawrence, the actress who has portrayed the shape shifting blue-skinned mutant Mystique in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past is saying that the next film in the X-saga will be her last.
In an interview with MTV, Lawrence was asked about whether X-Men: Apocalypse would be the last film in which she’d play the morally ambiguous mutant. She emphatically said that “It is my last one, yes.”
While this could be seen as a huge loss, it’s not as if there isn’t an abundance of mutants for FOX to choose from. And who knows if Bryan Singer even had plans for Mystique past this third film.
One thing is for sure – it’s not like it’s going to take an act of God to replace her. Lawrence is the second actress to play Mystique, behind Rebecca Romijn. The good news about playing a shapeshifter is that you can always explain why she looks different just by saying “She’s a shapeshifter.” Problem solved.
This marks the second actor departing after this film. Nicholas Hoult, who plays Hank McCoy / Beast, has said that he isn’t signed past this film either. The difference is that Hoult sounded amenable to actually coming back for more films if they wanted him.
But with the introduction of “new” mutants Storm, Cyclops, Jean Grey and Nightcrawler in Apocalypse, it’s not like the X-Men franchise is hurting for mutants.
