With no solo Black Widow film to tie her down, Scarlett Johansson has her options open (outside of being needed for the occasional cameo in Marvel Studios film). She’s got a few projects in her queue right now, but a huge opportunity may be landing in her lap.
According to the peeps at The Tracking Board, Johansson is the leading choice to pay the female lead in Universal’s upcoming Creature from the Black Lagoon remake.
This new version is an updated take on the 1954 classic of the same name. In the original, a group of scientists find a terrifying half human / half fish hybrid while on an expedition in the Amazon. Scarlett Johansson will be up for the role that Julia Adams made famous forthcoming film.
The new Creature would be a part of Universal’s plans to make a shared “Monster Universe” which incorporates all of its horror franchises. While a shared universe isn’t something new for Universal, crossing over characters like Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolfman and Dracula, The Creature has never taken part in one of these crossover-style films.
While it would be neat and I personally think Johansson would be a great choice, she’s already got a lot on her plate. And with Universal looking to get this shared cinematic universe of theirs up and running, they may not have time to wait for the actress to get her affairs in order and make time for them.
Still, if she could fit it into her schedule, I’d be there on opening day to see it. I’m crossing my fingers that they’ll pay homage to the original and give it to us in 3-D.
