Warner Bros made a huge deal out of finding the right director for Wonder Woman. It was never said outright, but the studio was looking for a woman (because, hey – only a female can direct a female-led comic book movie, right?) and they thought they found the right choice in Michelle MacLaren.
Well the search is on again as MacLaren and Warner Bros have parted ways. The Hollywood Reporter posted the first official statement from the studio:
Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together.
“Creative Differences” could mean any number of things. It was rumored that MacLaren had a particular vision and that was why the WB had signed her on. With a screenplay currently being worked on by Jason Fuchs, could the studio have leaned more towards a vision he was seeing instead of what brought MacLaren to the table? We probably won’t find out for a while, if ever.
What we do know is Gal Gadot is set to star in the solo WW film and it has a release date of June 23, 2017. With a Fall 2015 film date already penciled in, my guess is that Warner Bros will be scrambling to find a director sooner rather than later.
Hopefully they go with the most qualified choice, not just the most qualified choice with two X chromosomes.
