Not to be outdone by Disney, Warner Bros has recently inked a multi-picture deal to bring a slew of films to the biggest of big screens.
The WB will bring thirty movies to the large screen up through the year 2020. The official press release had the following to say regarding the deal between IMAX and Warner Bros:
Under the agreement, IMAX will be part of a number of high-profile tentpoles from Warner Bros. Pictures, including The Man from U.N.C.L.E. , In the Heart of the Sea, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Tarzan movie, the King Arthur movie, Suicide Squad, Geostorm, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Jungle Book: Origins, and Godzilla 2. The deal also encompasses a number of upcoming DC tentpoles, as well as future LEGO movies, including The LEGO Movie Sequel.
I see this as both good news and bad news. While I love the IMAX format this gives us a plethora of choices…almost too many. Where most movies in IMAX a few years ago would get a few weeks to a little more than a month, now I can easily see a lot of films cycling out within a week or two. This means less chances for people to see a movie they really want to see on the IMAX screen.
But then again, this may work in IMAX’s and the studio’s favor. With the risk of not seeing the film you want to see next week because something else is coming in, I could definitely see IMAX theaters selling out for almost every show.
We’ll have to see how this plays out over the next few years. For now though, I’ve got to start planning and prioritizing what I need to see in IMAX.
