Hands down, one of the coolest fight scenes in Avengers: Age of Ultron was Iron Man vs Hulk. But apparently we were supposed to get a different kind of Hulk than we got in the final product.
So Hulk was supposed to be more wild and angry due to Scarlet Witch messing with his mind. He was supposed to go to an unheard of level of insanity and actually change color and become Grey Hulk.
Wired spoke with special effects company ILM and got the following tidbit:
“Initially, Hulk was actually planned to turn grey when he’s angry Hulk in the Hulkbuster sequence but hey, everybody wanted the green guy. So, in the end, ILM just changed his eyes to make them look more sullen when he’s under the control of Scarlet Witch.”
That would have been kind of neat. But fanboys the world over probably would have complained.
In the comics, when Hulk goes grey he gets more articulate – planning things and even speaking in full sentences. So maybe a savage Grey Hulk would have sent the fanboys into a tizzying rage.
It’s fun to think just how far we came to almost seeing this. There was even a Funko POP figure made of a “Savage Hulk” that was exclusive to Hot Topic stores.
Maybe someday soon, when Marvel Studios regains the rights to distribute Hulk films once again, we’ll get to see a Grey Hulk. For now, we can only wonder what may have been.
