Kevin Smith’s Mallrats sequel is one film I’m highly looking forward to. The director recently sent out a tweet letting us know just how far along he is in the proceedings.
20 years in the making. 113 pages fulla old friends & new jokes. This is for you, Jim. Wish you were here. #MallBrats
So the new film is called MallBrats? I’m…well, I’m not too sure how I feel. At first glance I get it. It doesn’t scream “SEQUEL” like a number 2 would which could potentially scare off an audience, while at the same time it feels familiar enough that the older fans will know exactly what it is. But for some reason I can’t help but think of a bunch of oversized Bratz dolls when I see that title… or something akin to all those cartoons in the eighties that took the original and just made them younger like The Flinstone Kids or A Pup Named Scooby Doo. Does this means we’ll be seeing the original character’s children running rampant??
It’s been confirmed that a lot of original cast members (pretty much everyone but Ben Affleck) have signed on so far. Smith has said that he’s written in 18 returning characters along with six new ones (the titular Brats themselves?).
Smith is a huge John Hughes fan. Could he be trying to create his own Brat Pack here with his newest flick?
Whatever he does, I’m sure Smith’s dearly departed friend and producer Jim Jacks (the Jim mentioned in the tweet) would be proud.
Shooting on MallBrats is planned for later this year with a 2016 release date being eyed by the filmmaker.
