She’s been in superhero flicks, kid friendly films about princesses, space exploration epics and musicals. Now Anne Hathaway may have signed on for her strangest and funnest role yet.
The Oscar winning actress has signed on to star in director Nacho Vigalondo’s newest project Colossal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The description of the film is “Godzilla meets Lost In Translation.”
I’m sure I’m not alone when I say…WTF?
Hathaway has been tapped to play Gloria, an everywoman who has just lost her job and fiance, necessitating a move back to her hometown. But she starts to hear about giant lizard attacks in Tokyo and starts to realize that she’s connected to these terrible events through the power of her mind.
Vigalondo talked about this last year, saying “It’s going to be the cheapest Godzilla movie ever, I promise. It’s going to be a serious Godzilla movie but I’ve got an idea that’s going to make it so cheap that you will feel betrayed.” The filmmaker is very into the idea of using practical effects over CGI.
In a more recent statement, Vigalondo talked up his script, star and crew. “Colossal is my most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one,” he said. “Having Anne and this terrific team around goes beyond my craziest expectations.”
I’m definitely behind Nacho Vigalondo. I was very much a fan of Open Windows, and even though his section of V/H/S: Viral (Parallel Monsters) wasn’t my favorite it was still really good and gave us an interesting twist. As long as he brings another batshit crazy script it should be a fun ride that may just propel the director from the fringe into the mainstream.
