When you think about it, this is a really nice casting choice.

The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that actor Jon Bernthal has signed on for Season 2 of the Marvel Studios / Netflix series Daredevil. Bernthal will portray Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher.

Bernthal will be the fourth actor to take on the role of Marvel’s deadliest vigilante (after Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson). Out of all four, Jon Bernthal is probably the closest in resemblance to Frank castle as he looks today. He even looks like a Steve Dillon drawing!

This version of The Punisher is slated to try and clean up Hells Kitchen no matter how lethal it needs to get.

Executive Producer Jeph Loeb had the following to say:

Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the former The Walking Dead actor can bring to the role. As Shane on TWD, Bernthal had a real viciousness to him when he needed it. If he brings that kind of performance to Netflix, they may need to give him his own series!

Tom Hardy recently expressed interest in playing Castle on the big screen, but with Marvel Studios trying to stay on the brighter side of things, that dream was highly unlikely. The Netflix universe, while still connected, is still an area that can get grim and gritty if need be.

It’s unknown as to whether The Punisher will be a season regular or a recurring role, but word is that no matter how much screen time he gets, Frank Castle is here to flip Daredevil’s world upside down.
