Sure he’s a smooth talker as Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, but those are good guys with a moral compass. Could Robert Downey Jr play an unrepentant scumbag and (what many call) the world’s greatest con man? Warner Bros is hoping so.
The Hollywood Reporter has the good word that the studio is looking to the actor to star in its adaptation of the book proposal Chasing Phil: The World’s Greatest Con Man, Two Undercover FBI Agents, And Their Amazing Around The World Adventure by David Howard. They’ve also gained the life story rights to FBI agents Jim Wedick and Jack Brennan.
The story follows two young FBI agents in the agency’s early attempts at fighting white collar crime. They go undercover to infiltrate the world of Phil Kitzer, a scheming criminal mastermind. Kitzer was also part of an international network of criminals known as The Fraternity.
Right now, Downey is just signed on to produce, but the WB wants him in this role.
The film, described as “The Wolf Of Wall Street meets Goodfellas” would be a good change of pace for Downey. After spending the last seven years as Tony Stark / Iron Man for Marvel Studios and only a handful of other memorable roles besides that, this might be just what he needs to reinvigorate his career with a little non-Marvel diversity.
I’m not saying he’s gotten stale, but his resume could use a shot in the arm at this point in time.
