SDCC ’15: IDW Announces New ‘Back to the Future’ Origin Comics!

Back to the Future

Get ready to go back in time!

IDW has just announced that they plan on releasing a new Back to the Future comic book, telling the story of just how Marty McFly and “Doc” Brown met up.

Reported by Comic Book Resources, the series will be spearheaded by BTTF screenwriter Bob Gale and written by IDW writers John Barber and Erik Burnham. A cast of rotating artists will join the writers.

The plan is for Gale to “offer suggestions” and then Barber and Burnham will proceed to write out smaller arcs with two stories taking place in each issue.

In an interview with CBR, Gale talked about just what the stories might entail for the first few issues:

In the first issue, our lead story will recount how Marty and Doc first met in 1982. The second story shows how Doc got involved with the Manhattan Project during World War II. John came up with a clever framing device which we’ll use throughout the series which involves Doc’s family from the end of “Part III,” and the first story features someone you may not have expected to see.

As we progress, we’ll try to use characters from the movies or their relatives whenever it makes sense, as well as include “easter egg” trilogy references. In #2, we’ll pose an answer to the question of how Doc’s house burned down.

From the sounds of it, this might be a series that offer very little in the way of time travel in the main stories, which is fine by me. I’d love to see some of the history that a film series like this just can’t provide.

The first issue of the ongoing series is set to debut this October.
