It looks like Chris Pine is headed to the DC Cinematic Universe.
The actor won’t be wearing a power ring and playing Green Lantern, like so many rumors had us thinking. Instead, according to Variety, the actor has signed on to play Wonder Woman love interest Steve Trevor.
Pine has signed on for the upcoming Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot as the titular superheroine. He has also signed on for an unspecified number of sequels (and possibly other tie-in films) at Warner Bros.
In the comics, Steve Trevor was an Army officer who crash lands on Themyscira, a.k.a. Paradise Island, home to Wonder Woman and her female family of warriors, the Amazons. It’s more than likely this will be updated for the film. I could see Steve Trevor being a government liason between the United States and Themyscira. This would put him in direct contact with Wonder Woman on a constant basis.
The film will be directed by Patty Jenkins, after Michelle MacLaren left the project last month due to creative differences. The screenplay is currently being written by Jason Fuchs.
I like Chris Pine for this. He does great playing the goofy love interest with a hint of seriousness (Princess Diaries 2 and This Means War come to mind). He just could steal the film in this role.
After making her big screen debut in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, the Amazonian Princess will have her own solo film bow into theaters June 23, 2017.
