Will Channing Tatum Leave ‘Gambit’ and Start Busting Ghosts With Chris Pratt?

When one door closes another one opens, or so the saying goes and apparently the door may be closing on Channing Tatum playing a mutant for FOX.

The Wrap is reporting that Tatum may be getting ready to walk away from the upcoming Gambit film, which is sad as it was supposedly a passion project for the actor. This comes on the heels of the news that director Rupert Wyatt has recently been screen-testing female leads with the actor, including French actress Lea Seydoux.

If the deal with Channing Tatum does fall through, the studio would need to find a new leading man rather quickly, as filming was slated to begin this fall to hit the theatrical release date of October 7, 2016.

Don’t think Tatum would just sit on laurels resting though. The actor has 23 Jump Street in the works and a possible directorial debut to think about.

And there’s still Ghostbusters rumors swirling.

Tatum and Chris Pratt were two names bandied about this past spring in regards to a male-centric Ghostbusters film as a companion piece to Paul Feig’s upcoming all-women team. Marvel Studios go-to directors Anthony & Joe Russo were said to be in line to direct.

But Tatum’s reps said that it wasn’t happening and Pratt said that he was too busy. So that squashed that idea… Until Drew Pearce talked to MTV while promoting Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation.

Pearce was in talks to write the Ghostbusters script and apparently he didn’t get the word that the project was put on hiatus, because he finished preliminary work on it!

I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks. Obviously it’s top secret, but there’s a gigantic bold idea that I came up with, and the Russo brothers — who did Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are doing Civil War at the moment — and Ivan Reitman, who did the original movie, are going to take that and run with it. Obviously I cannot tell you what it is, but hopefully in one year’s time you’ll know!

Pearce clarified a bit on Twitter:

When asked about Tatum and Pratt being involved, Pearce had the following insight:

That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project. Whether that happens or not is very much above my pay grade. It’s just my job to give them something exciting that maybe they’ll do.

So it may just be behind-the-scenes talk as far as the two actors go, but it’s promising that it might still be talked about by high-ranking studio execs.

Pearce is still under the impression that he’s writing for a shared universe, which he has experience doing when he wrote for Marvel Studios doing Iron Man 3:

My personal inclination is to try and make everything occur in the same Ghostbusters universe, because I feel, as a fan, that’s what I would want. Here in New York, you just wanna tie it all together. Whether that happens or not we’ll see, but I’ve certainly given them the tools to do that, I hope.

As much as I’d love to see Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt bust ghosts, I’d still rather see Tatum doing a bad cajun accent as Gambit. I feel like Feig’s Ghostbusters may just kill any future installments Sony has planned and Gambit would be a more solid career choice.
