Brie Larson to Step up and Take a Side in the ‘Battle of the Sexes’

This has been a breakout year in film for Brie Larson. She had a killer supporting role in Trainwreck and is getting great reviews for her work in the psychological drama Room. She’s even signed on to star in the King Kong reboot Kong: Skull Island.

Now it looks like she’s stepped right into the middle of a battle…a Battle of the Sexes.

Variety reports that the actress will star as tennis player Billie Jean King in one of three planned adaptations of the infamous “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match that pitted then 29-year-old King against 55-year-old male tennis star Bobby Riggs.

Steve Carrell has already signed on to play Riggs.

The script comes from Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy and will be directed by the team of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. Battle of the Sexes is said to be something in the vein of Dayton and Faris’ Little Miss Sunshine, which means a good mix of comedy and drama.

Emma Stone was originally set to play King, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. If the job called for someone that could bring drama with comedic undertones, Larson is an excellent second choice.

As stated earlier, there are two other films in the works based on the exact same topic. Proof is slated to star Paul Giamatti and Elizabeth Banks, while Match Maker is on the schedule with just Will Ferrell currently signed on.
