After spending the last few years of his life dedicated to a Warcraft film that will soon be released, filmmaker Duncan Jones has seemingly set his sights on his next project. Mute, a movie idea that has been with the director for over a decade will finally see fruition.
And to add fuel to the fire it seems like a couple of actors have officially signed on. According to American Film Market (via The Playlist) Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd have signed on for the project.
The official synopsis sounds weirdly interesting, but coming from the man who gave us Moon and Source Code I’d expect nothing less than thought provoking:
Berlin. Forty years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West in a science-fiction Casablanca. Leo Beiler (Skarsgard), a mute bartender has one reason and one reason only for living here, and she’s disappeared. But when Leo’s search takes him deeper into the city’s underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Rudd) seem to be the only recurring clue, and Leo can’t tell if they can help, or who he should fear most.
Jones also released his own statement regarding finally seeing his dream project come to life:
I’ve been working towards making Mute for 12 years now. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that we’re finally going to shoot this utterly unique film. The fact that I get to make it with Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd makes it all the more exciting. Mute is a film that will last. It is unlike any other science fiction being made today.
The icing on this cake is that Sam Rockwell will be involved AND the film is set in the same universe as Moon. I loved Moon and thought that it was one of the more original ideas to come from the sci-fi genre in a long while. If Jones thinks he can top it I’d love to see what he has in mind play out on the big screen.
No official start date for production or release date was given as of yet, but signing a couple of high-caliber actors like Skarsgard and Rudd is definitely a step in the right direction.
