Marvel Comics doesn’t know the meaning of the words “Event Fatigue.” Hot on the heels of their “biggest event ever,” the universe changing Secret Wars, they already have the next big thing (Civil War II) planned. And now we’ve got the teaser for their NEXT big event (which is rumored to start in their Free Comic Book Day offering) and I am wholly underwhelmed.
The other day the publisher sent out a generic image that said DEAD NO MORE, which made me wonder who they’d be bringing back form the dead this time. But as Marvel usually does, we got another image, this time it was a Spider-centric teaser.
So it’s no shock that Marvel starts with Spider-Man. The wall-crawler has plenty of people in his past taking a big dirt nap. Could they be bringing back Doc Ock? Gwen Stacy? Kraven? Uncle Ben? The possibilities are endless…and nauseating.
I just know we’ll be getting more teasers aimed at the X-Men and Avengers sets, as well as some other random characters. But what does it mean? Is Marvel bringing back every dead character? Will they go back to being dead after this “event” is done? Why are they coming back?
I just don’t know anymore. I was skeptical when they brought Bucky back all those years ago, but it turned out to be for the better. But there are just some characters that need to stay six feet under (Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacy specifically). And how can any company ask us to emotionally invest in a story if the character will just be brought back eventually through some hokey mumbo-jumbo?
I’ll keep following this and more than likely grab the FCBD issue to see what the big deal is all about. But I don’t have a lot of hope for this right now.
