So the new Ghostbusters trailer is here. First of all, allow me a victory lap. This trailer showcases a LOT of what we revealed in April of last year in our plot breakdown of the entire film. For instance, the trailer definitely confirmed:
- Headquarters above a Chinese restaurant
- Patty works underground
- Ecto-1 being an old hearse that comes from Patty
- Slimer appears (Remember when Feig said this wasn’t the case a couple months back on Twitter?)
- Ghostbusters logo comes from graffiti underground
What I find a bit troubling is what exactly Feig’s movie is supposed to be. He said he wanted to jettison the previous films so that he could be free to make his own Ghostbusters film. If that’s the case why spend the opening chunk of the trailer reminding you that 30 years ago four scientists saved New York City? What does that have to do with Feig’s film? Is this film related to the originals? If it’s not, why add that bit? AND for the love of Christ, why is Slimer EXACTLY the same as he was in the original film if it’s not related to those films?
Maybe the synopsis helps:
Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of hilarious new characters. Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. This summer, they’re here to save the world!
So it’s a reboot? I don’t think this could be defined as a reboot since it seems to follow a lot of beats from the original. That would make it a remake.
I honestly don’t know what to make of this thing. There are a couple nice jokes in the trailer and I like all of these actresses immensely. Wiig and McKinnon certainly look to be the standouts, based on the trailer. But something just does not feel right to me.
How do you feel after seeing our first bit of footage? It’s only a couple minutes, so we don’t have much to really go by… Do you feel better or worse about the remake/reboot/sequel/alternate universe version of Ghostbusters?
Alright…I don’t hate it as much as I thought I would have. Also seeing slimer put a big smile on my face. The classic theme coming in and out through the trailer was pretty cool too.
I don’t think this will reach epic heights as the original but I have a general curiosity now about this one.
