Another day, another graphic novel adaptation as CBS Films and Lionsgate will bring the classic graphic novel American Assassin to the big screen with Micheal Keaton starring & “Kill The Messanger” director Michael Cuesta helming the project.
Based on Vince Flynn’s novel, the film will follow Cold War vet Stan Hurley (Keaton), who would be the CIA’s most dangerous operative if more than a few people knew he actually existed. Hurley’s director tasks him with training a new black ops recruit named Mitch Rapp, who is devastated by the loss of his fiancee to a terrorist attack. The pair is then dispatched on a mission with a lethal Turkish agent to stop a mysterious op from starting WW3 in the Middle East.
America Assassin is 1 of 14 books with the majority of them finding themselves on the NYT best seller list and have collectively sold over 20 millions copies to date. Currently there is no one attached to play Rapp, who is the main protagonist of all the novels. This will definitely be a change of pace for Keaton, who has stuck to more prestige pics recently with both Birdman and Spotlight winning the last two Oscar’s for best picture. Keaton will next be seen in The Founder, which will show the rise of McDonald’s mogul Ray Croc.
Cuesta will be working with a script by Stephen Schiff (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) Lorenzo Di Bonaventura & Nick Wechsler will produce the film with production scheduled to begin this summer.
