File this under Why Do They Feel The Need To Do This?? – apparently DC Comics plans on revealing The Joker’s true identity in the pages of DC Comics this year.
This is a pickup from a teaser in Justice League #42. In that issue Batman sat in the infamous Mobius Chair and had access to all knowledge everywhere. After asking who killed his parents, the Dark Knight asked to know the real name of the Clown Prince of Crime. While we didn’t find out the answer Batman did and he was both shocked and seemingly pissed at the revelation.
At WonderCon this past weekend, during the REBIRTH panel that spoke about DC’s newest reboot / re-imagining, Justice League writer and DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns said that we’d see the payoff to the reveal in issue #50, out later this year.
I can’t be in the minority in thinking this is the worst idea since Greedo shooting first, right? (Shout out to Kevin Smith on that one!) I mean The Joker just being some random psycho whose M.O. changes like most people change their socks is dead-ass scary. If we find out he had some rough childhood or was bred to be the greatest villain ever it takes away from his mystique.
I could be wrong in this (and I hope I am) but I feel like I won’t be. I know Justice League will be jumping to the top of many Read Piles that day. I don’t know if I’m looking forward to it that much though. We’ll see once the story is printed and there’s no going back.
