Bryan Singer Wouldn’t Mind Getting the Original Band Back Together

Nostalgia hits us all. Whether it’s a TV show we remember through rose-colored glasses or how cyclical pop culture can be what’s old can usually be counted on to be new again eventually.

Some things should stay in the past though. For example, the current crop of X-Men films. Rebooting the series was a smart idea, giving fresh blood to a franchise that was seemingly dead in the water After X-Men: The Last Stand. But along came X-Men: First Class with it’s younger and newer versions of classic characters that were already portrayed. And while it was fun to see some of the old guard back for the time travel adventure that was Days Of Future Past I think Apocalypse got it right by introducing new actors and actresses as Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and Nightcrawler.

But Bryan Singer, the director who ushered in the mutants over a decade-and-a-half ago and is currently helming their current resurgence, wouldn’t mind getting the old gang back together for another turn. In an interview with Fandango promoting X-Men: Apocalypse he told the following story:

The night we had a little screening for the cast, I went and saw Patrick Stewart’s wife sing at a local venue with Ian McKellen. The two of us were sitting there watching Patrick’s lovely wife sing — she has a great voice — and I was thinking, yeah, at some point it would be lovely to see them all again. They’re all great actors and great people, and I had great experiences with them. I’d love to see that happen — it’s just you have to figure it out. How do you do that? You can’t do it for the sake of doing it — you have to do it right. Or else it’s just one of those cobbled-together things.

While I agree you shouldn’t do something like this just for the sake of doing it, I think the right story has come and gone – and it’s name was Days Of Future Past. We saw enough of the original cast to whet my nostalgia appetite and pretty much passed the torch to the new kids in that movie (and to an extent this new film as well).

From what I’ve seen in X-Men: Apocalypse though they have enough stories to keep this new crop of students busy for at least two or three more films so bringing back the original cast most likely won’t happen…hopefully.
