Could Marvel Studio’s answer to Aquaman be swimming in the currents of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Possibly.
Recently on Kevin Smith’s Fat Man On Batman podcast, guest Joe Quesada was asked about where Namor the Sub-Mariner is in terms of a movie and here’s what he had to say:
KS: Where is the Sub-Mariner, by the way? Who has that?
JQ: We do. He’s in the comics.
KS: No, what studio? How come you guys aren’t diving into the water?
JQ: I can’t speak for studios.
KS: Is it elsewhere? The same people that own Iron Man, have Sub-Mariner?
JQ: As far as I know, yeah we do. It’s not at Fox, it’s not at Sony.
The thing is Namor’s rights have been languishing at Universal while nothing happens (which would also explain why we haven’t seen him in a Fantastic Four film at FOX). So did Quesada not mention Universal on purpose or is he confused?
It wouldn’t be the first time the EIC at Marvel Comics was mistaken. Back in 2012 he said that Namor was free and clear for the MCU. Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige cleared that up in 2013 saying that Namor was still at Universal. But then in 2014 Feige did say that a Namor film was possible but it would require cutting through a lot of contractual red tape.
Might Namor be free now though and it’s just a matter of time before he cameos in a film to set something up for Phase Four? If he shows up anywhere I’d put my money on Black Panther. As Namor is royalty himself, these two regal superbeings butting heads would be quite the film.
Quesada said he could neither “confirm nor deny” Namor showing up in any franchises at this time, so keep checking back as we’ll report any news as soon as we see it.
