When the smoke starts to clear in 2018 the Marvel Cinematic Universe is most likely going to look a whole lot different, and that starts this week with Captain America: Civil War. But the landscape won’t be the only thing changing. A couple of already titled films will be getting some different names when they finally hit theaters and we’re talking about the two Avengers films that will close out Phase Three.

In an interview with UPROXX, directors Joe and Anthony Russo said that the Avengers: Infinity War films will most likely be renamed by the time they hit multiplexes:

“The movies are two very different movies,” said Joe Russo. “It’s misleading,” agreed Anthony Russo. Joe Russo then added: “The intention is we will change it, we just haven’t come up with the titles yet. But, yes, we will change it. And, yes, that is a scoop: we will retitle them.”

I always had a feeling that these films would get different names. Putting Infinity War out there was just a way to get people talking about Thanos and letting fans know that the end of almost a decade’s worth of stories was finally in sight.

And just how tightly will these films follow Jim Starlin’s classic Infinity-themed storylines? Probably not all that close. Marvel Studios has conditioned fans that know the stories to expect the unexpected – in that the comics are a good guideline but they aren’t the be-all, end-all gospel when it comes to the films. Screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus said as much in an interview with JoBlo:

“The Winter Soldier owes a great deal to the [Ed] Brubaker run but it’s not the Brubaker run. Civil War owes a great deal to [Mark] Millar, but it’s not close to the Civil War run. So we’ll do the same thing with Thanos and his gauntlet.”

We’ll see just what Marvel has in store for us fans as Phase Three rolls out over the next few years.
