Looks like boxing is back on the silver screen in a big way this year. Above you’ll see the newest trailer for Antoine Fuqua’s Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal which drops on July 25th. On top of a great lead actor and director it has a nice supporting cast consisting of Rachel McAdams and Forest Whitaker. I personally am pretty excited to see Oona Laurence in this after her phenomenal turn in Ross Partridges excellent first film, Lamb.
Beyond that we also have Rocky spinoff in Creed starring Michael B. Jordan and directed by his Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler on November 25th as well as Bleed for This, the true story of Vinny Paz starring Miles Teller presumably dropping towards the end of the year during awards season.
I’m personally excited for all of them, for various reasons, but it does seem like a lot of boxing films to drop within months of each other. Who will come out as the champ? My money is on Creed. Rocky has a built in fanbase and Jordan and Coogler are a mean one-two punch.
What are your thoughts? Which are you most interested in?
