I really liked 28 Days Later. I remeber being really psyched for it after seeing the first five minutes that were released online as a teaser and going to see it at a midnight show (the only real way to see it) on opening weekend. It scared the shit out of me. The scene with Cillian Murphy in the church still freaks me out a little bit. It revitalized zombies for a new generation (and don’t go whining “But they’re not zombies!” It’s easier than constantly saying Rage Disease Infected Humans over and over).

They turned an $8 million dollar budget into a worldwide box office gross of $82 million. Danny Boyle had a huge hit and possible hot franchise on his hands. Then came 28 Weeks Later, the natural progression in time. Although it wasn’t quite as well received as it’s predecessor I enjoyed it. Robert Carlisle was a huge prick that you loved to see get what he had coming to him (and it had Jeremy Renner!). It made a modes profit and everyone thought we’d eventually get 28 Months Later, especialy after the ending that showed the virus going worldwide.

Then…nothing. The news stopped coming and the speculation well dried up. We had the BOOM! Studios comic book that bridged the gap between the first and second movie, but all talks of another sequel just suddenly stopped.

Until today.

Alex Garland, the writer of the first and producer of the second film, recently was interviewed by IGN and dropped the bomb that 28 Months Later may be back on the docket.

Garland was quoted as saying  “We’ve just started talking about it seriously. We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.”

It may be a ways off, but the next installment may be on it’s way. And word is that Danny Boyle, who gave up the director’s chair to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo for the sequel, may take the reigns back for the third movie.

As a fan of the series I’m excited by even the possibility of the story continuing. And if Boyle comes back that’s just icing on the cake.
