In confirmation to a rumor that was reported previously, Daniel Bruhl will be playing classic Captain America villain Baron Zemo in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Bruhl broke the news to The Independent that he’d be playing Zemo, but that it would be Helmut Zemo, the more contemporary character, and not the World War II incarnation of Heinrich Zemo.
Bruhl was quoted as saying the following:
“I think I can tell you that without being thrown into Marvel prison. For the first few days I’ll walk around like a little boy, just amazed by the megalomania of it. It’s such a huge project. We could do 20 films with the budget.”
Bruhl’s Helmut Zemo is the son of Heinrich Zemo, a former HYDRA scientist and leader of the Avengers antagonistic counterparts The Masters Of Evil. In the comics, after years of being a bad guy, Helmut Zemo turns a new leaf and leads a team of bad-guys-turned-good named The Thunderbolts.
And the Star Spangled Avenger won’t just have Baron Zemo to deal with. Frank Grillo recently sent out a tweet that may have hinted at the return of Brock Rumlow a.k.a. Crossbones. The tweet had an illustration of Crossbones with the following text:
“I laugh at your super powers ” Grab your hammers and shields and what ever else you need. I’m ready” #X
With Iron Man on one side and these villains on the other, it’s looking pretty dire for Captain America. The last two Captain America films were fantastic and I have no doubt this one is shaping up to follow in their footsteps. May 6, 2016 can’t come quick enough.
