My first thought upon hearing that Scott Glenn had been cast as Daredevil’s sensei, Stick, in Netflix’s upcoming Marvel Universe show was that it was really great casting.
Then, almost just as quickly I thought, “Wait a minute, he already played that character in Suckerpunch.” (To be fair, I only watched Suckerpunch once, so I could be completely off on that. But I remembered thinking he reminded me of Stick from Daredevil for some reason)
In the comics, Matt Murdock is blinded by radioactive isotope. As a result his remaining senses heighten astronomically to the point he’s nearly unable to function. Stick teaches Murdock to harness his senses and trains him in martial arts.
I have to say, I’ve been happy with everything they’ve done with this Netflix show. The casting has been solid in all regards. I was skeptical with Drew Goddard stepping down from the show to focus on his Spider-Man duties. Steven DeKnight (Buffy, Angel, Spartacus) then stepped up to assume the duties from Goddard as showrunner.
Rumor has it that Daredevil will be featured prominently at NYCC. I’m hearing that we’ll probably get our first look at the suit there, as well. Daredevil, specifically the Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker runs have solidified the character as my favorite superhero as an adult. I really need them to pull off this Netflix series, in a big way. The film adaptations for Daredevil and Elektra were so disappointing.
I have faith that with the character’s inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we, like Matt Murdock, have nothing to fear.
What do you guys think? Are you excited by the upcoming Netflix show?
