“Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep. Rick’s father used to read this story to him as a boy. The road to the East stretches out before him. Will he set forth?”

To be up front, I have not been one of the Terrence Malick faithful. I have not connected with his last couple films like I have with his earlier work.

I wanted to feel more during Tree of Life. I was looking for an experience, I wanted it to move me. It didn’t do it.

As muchb as I wanted to, I couldn’t get through To the Wonder.

Malick sure can lens a beautiful film though. I respect the hell out of him as an artist. He’s following his muse and making the films he wants to make. You have to admire and respect that.

No matter what, I’ll never write off a Malick film without giving it a shot and I absolutely plan to give Knight of Cups a look. He’s assembled a hell of a cast, including

Knight of Cups looks as beautiful as I would expect a Malick film to look. He’s assembled a hell of a supporting cast, beyond Bale, Blanchett and Portman that includes Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots and Armin Mueller-Stahl.

Knight of Cups is set to premiere at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival in February.
