‘Gremlins 3’ in the Works and it’s NOT a Remake or Reboot

Not only is Jurassic World the biggest movie of 2015 and one of the biggest of all-time, it’s now inspiring a whole new type of sequel where we pick up in real-time years later. That’s what the newest Gremlins movie is looking to do, at least.

During a screening of the original 1984 film at London’s Prince Charles Cinema, Zach Galligan (star of the first two films) dropped some knowledge on the crowd during a Q&A. The BBC managed to nab the relevant quotes regarding the non-reboot / remake:

It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form. Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade…So the only thing they will be – and apparently are going to be – doing is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later.

I have to wonder if this will take on the same campy tone as the second movie or go into a darker place and be more tonal with the original film.

Whatever the case may be I’m taking this with a grain of salt. At this point we don’t know how involved Galligan will be with the film and what his real level of knowledge is. We know for sure that director Joe Dante won’t be coming back as he’s said as much earlier this year.

I’m all for a new Gremlins movie. I love the first one and it’s pretty much required viewing in my household around Christmas. And as cheesy as the second one is I like it a lot too. If they can find a new wrinkle with the mythos and deliver a solid film we might see the revival of the franchise.
