In the next chapter of the saga that is Pacific Rim 2 it would seem that the film is back on again. Only this time it won’t be Guillermo del Toro at the helm.
Deadline reports that Steven S. DeKnight has been tapped to direct the next chapter in the in the continuing story of giant mechs (Jaegers) versus creepy looking but very deadly monsters (Kaiju).
DeKnight is best known for being the showrunner behind the insanely popular first season of Daredevil from Marvel Studios and Netflix. He left that show in the capable hands of Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez. DeKnight is also known as the creator of the Starz series Spartacus and has been involved with shows like Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, Angel and Smallville.
This film has gone through so many starts and stops you’d think it was a sixteen-year-old on their first driving lesson. I really liked the first one but could tell from the sparse Saturday night crowd when I went that it was going to be a tough sell to American audiences. While it did well worldwide it didn’t do well enough to warrant a rush on a sequel.
The original plan as for del Toro to get this project going in 2015 for a 2017 release. But with Universal getting cold feet GdT moved on to other projects. He’ll still stay on as a producer though which means we’ll still feel his influence on the project.
No current timeframe for start of filming or release was talked about when this news came out, but as soon as we hear anything we’ll let you know!
