The future is coming…and it’s going to be big.
/Film is reporting that Disney’s next ride-turned-film Tomorrowland will show in an expanded aspect ratio when it hits IMAX theaters this May.
While not shot in native IMAX, the image will be shown in an expanded size. This is similar to how IMAX showed the last James Bond film, Skyfall – that movie was shown in a 1.9:1 ratio, which is 25% larger than a normal screen. This means that instead of switching aspect ratios like The Dark Knight Rises or Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol (which had select scenes shot in IMAX), Tomorrowland will just fill up the screen a little more than normal.
Also announced was that a six minute preview clip will be shown before all domestic and select international screenings of Avengers: Age of Ultron in IMAX. Just what the clip encompasses is not known at the moment, but previous clips were usually a scene from an upcoming film.
Tomorrowland, directed by Brad Bird and starring George Clooney, drops into theaters May 22.
