‘Independence Day’ Sequel may not Have Will Smith but it Will Have a Connection

So the 20-years-in-the-making sequel to the big-budget popcorn flick Independence Day is starting to take shape. And while Will Smith may not be returning to reprise his star-making role, the movie will still have a connection to the former Fresh Prince.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jessie Usher (When the Game Stands Tall, Starz’s Survivor’s Remorse) has signed on for a big role. Apparently he’ll be playing the son of Will Smith’s character. Whether this is the grown up version of Vivica A. Fox’s little boy, Smith’s stepson, or a child that Smith and Fox had together, is yet to be revealed.

As reported some time ago, Hunger Games franchise star Liam Hemsworth is still set to headline the action picture and is close to inking a deal. It’s been rumored that Hemsworth will be playing the nephew of the President played by Bill Pullman in the original film.

Returning to their original roles are Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman (though Pullman is not official quite yet.). Roland Emmerich, director of the first foray into alien invasion, will also come back to helm the second coming.

I don’t have a lot of expectations for this film. I thought the first one was a fine movie all by itself and a sequel wasn’t really screaming to be made. But we get one anyway, so we may as well make the best of it. Hemsworth is a decent actor but this is a huge studio tentpole picture, so it’s make or break time for him now. I hope he can do like his brother Chris and start to really make waves on the big screen.
