Matt Damon had said that he would only come back to the Bourne franchise if director Paul Greengrass returned to direct the next film. Well the actor got his wish. Greengrass is helming the fifth installment in the popular action/spy series with Damon set to reprise his role as titular spy Jason Bourne.
But they aren’t the only returning faces. Deadline is reporting that Julia Stiles has signed on to portray Nicky Parsons, a role that she played in the first three films of the series. Stiles is the only onscreen talent to have appeared in all three of the first Bourne films other than Matt Damon.
As far as opposition, it would appear as though Universal is lining up a top level opponent for Damon to go one-on-one with. The Wrap has the good word that Viggo Mortenson has been offered the role as the lead villain.
There were rumblings a few weeks ago that Alicia Vikander was going to be offered a major role in the upcoming film as well, but nothing has been confirmed on that front yet.
The next film will put the spotlight back on Jason Bourne after detouring to Bourne-esque character Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) in the fourth film. The Cross character isn’t expected to make an appearance in the fifth film, but an eventual meeting hasn’t been completely ruled out either.
We can expect the fifth Bourne film in theaters July 29, 2016.
