by: S. Scott Stanikmas

It looks like Ken Watanabe is now out of the upcoming Martin Scorcese film Silence according to Deadline. Replacing him will be Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano. Asano is well known for his roles in Marvel’s Thor films, 47 Ronin and Mongol (of which he was the star).

Asano will join the already cast Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson. The film is scripted by Jay Cocks and is an adaptation of the novel by Shusaku Endo.

In Silence Asano will play an interpreter who accompanies two Jesuit priests (Driver and Garfield) as they search for their mentor (Neeson) who went to spread the gospel of Christianity in 17th century Japan.

Shooting is expected to begin in Taiwan sometime soon. No release date has been given as of this writing.
