Production just got underway and already Guy Ritchie has provided us our first look at Charlie Hunnam in character as King Arthur in his upcoming film, Knights of the Round Table.
As is all the rage these days, Ritchie’s retelling of the classic story will be a grittier origin story than we’ve seen before, as evidenced by the official synopsis.
The bold new story introduces a streetwise young Arthur who runs the back alleys of London with his gang, unaware of the life he was born for until he grasps hold of the sword Excalibur—and with it, his future. Instantly challenged by the power of Excalibur, Arthur is forced to make some hard choices. Throwing in with the Resistance and a mysterious young woman named Guinevere, he must learn to master the sword, face down his demons and unite the people to defeat the tyrant Vortigern, who stole his crown and murdered his parents, and become King.
I’m hoping to be swayed but I really don’t care much to see another King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable retread. Idris Elba’s involvement early on had my curiosity VERY peaked, but his leaving kind of took the wind out of my sales.
What do you think? Are you ready for a King Arthur franchise?
