Marky Mark is the Big Hero Who Says Deep Things In the New ‘Patriots Day’ Trailer

I take issue with so many things about Patriots Day that I’m not sure where to begin.

I suppose it starts with Mark “It wouldn’t have gone down that way if I was on my 9/11 flight” Wahlberg starring in a film that only an authentic Boston guy could top line and get away without it being called a cash grab. Make no mistake though, it is a cash grab. Add to it, Peter “I only make films that are based on a true story these days” Berg and we have a real recipe for an actual tragedy told in the shallowest way possible, full of heroic low angle Marky Mark shots and filled to the brim with scenes designed to try and pull the tears out of your eyes. It’s despicable that they approached a community that was still healing after the trauma of a gunfight in their quiet neighborhood to ask if they could recreate the same gunfight to lend “authenticity” to their film.  Patriots Day may have been shot in Boston with a lead actor from Boston, but it feels as authentic as all the Boston-area people sporting their Boston Strong gear in the wake of the tragedy because it was fashionable. This film does not feel like it’s been made for the right reasons in any way.

Me? I’ll be waiting for David Gordon Green’s Stronger, an important story to come out of the Boston Marathon Bombing tragedy that has all the ingredients for an inspirational and moving film.

An account of the Boston Marathon bombing, PATRIOTS DAY is the powerful story of a community’s courage in the face of adversity.

In the aftermath of an unspeakable attack, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons) and nurse Carol Saunders (Michelle Monaghan) this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and celebrates the strength of the people of Boston.

Linda Cardellini Joins Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in the Cast of ‘Daddy’s Home’

by: S. Scott Stanikmas

The upcoming Mark Whalberg / Will Ferrell comedy Daddy’s Home has just cast Linda Cardellini, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Cardellini will play the current wife of Ferrell and the ex-wife of Whalberg.

The film, being directed by Sean Anders, will focus on a mild mannered radio executive (Ferrell) who will need to fight for his stepchildren’s love and admiration when their freeloading and freewheeling biological father (Whalberg) steps back into the picture.

Linda Cardellini is absolutely hilarious and great choice for this film. I loved her in Grandma’s Boy and thought she was great in Freaks and Geeks. She’s shown her range in TV dramas like ER and Mad Men as well children’s films like the live action Scooby-Doo movies.

Cardellini is currently working on the Netflix original series Bloodline, which centers on a family of four adult siblings. The show premieres in March. She’s also co-starring with Kristen Wiig in the new film Welcome To Me.

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg Team Up Again for ‘Daddy’s Home’

by: S. Scott Stanikmas

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, the hilarious duo that teamed up on screen to bring us The Other Guys, will once again be joining forces. They’ll be on opposite sides of the fence in the new comedy Daddy’s Home.

This time around we’ll see Will Ferrell as a mild mannered radio executive who wants nothing more than to be the best step-dad he can for his wife’s two children. But complications (and most likely hilarity) come in the form of Mark Wahlberg , the free-spirit and freeloading biological dad, who steps back into the picture to battle Ferrell for the kid’s love and admiration.

Ferrell does a great job playing the soft-spoken, down to earth guy who eventually goes batshit crazy. I like when he does something along those lines, like his characters in The Other Guys and Old School, as opposed to the “always on” kinds of characters, like he does in the Anchorman franchise or Talladega Nights.

This announcement comes on the heels of Wahlberg recently committing to playing Steve Austin the upcoming feature film adaptation of TV’s The Six Million Dollar Man. It kind of makes sense though. Mark Wahlberg has made a career out of doing a serious film or studio big budget action movie and then going and doing some off the wall comedy.

Sean Anders, the director behind That’s My Boy and Horrible Bosses 2, will helm this production. Filming is scheduled to begin later this year.

Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg Bringing ‘The Six Billion Dollar Man’ To Screens in 2016

by: Adam Glass

Well it looks like the Six Million Dollar Man will now be the Six Billion Dollar man due to inflation. Peter Berg is attached to direct with Mark Wahlberg starring as Steve Austin. We’d heard rumblings about Berg and Wahlberg teaming up way back in July.

For those of you who don’t know about the TV series, Steve Austin was a test pilot for the US Government who crashed an experimental plane. He was on the verge of death when the government stepped in and replaced both legs, his right arm and left eye with bionics. He performed mission s for the OSI (Office of Scientific Intelligence).

The film version has traveled a long road over the years, from Kevin Smith’s script to Jim Carrey and Todd Philips’ comedic take that never quite got off the ground.

Steve Austin was the original RoboCop in every sense and he was much cooler. The whole concept is based on the 1972 novel “Cyborg” by Martin Caidin. Bob Weinstein will be producing through Dimension Films and “The Six Billion Dollar Man” is now looking at a 2016 release.

I for one am stoked to hear this news. This was one of the first TV shows I remember watching when I was younger. I hope they can find a part for Lee Majors who played the original Steve Austin. This has the makings of a terrific franchise. Your thoughts?

Trailer: Mark Wahlberg in ‘The Gambler’ with Brie Larson and John Goodman

Jim Bennett (Academy Award® nominee Mark Wahlberg) is a risk taker. Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster (Michael Kenneth Williams) and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring (Alvin Ing) and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother (Academy Award® winner Jessica Lange) in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a loan shark with a paternal interest in Bennett’s future. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must take the ultimate risk for a second chance…

The Gambler opens on December 19th.

I’m generally not a Mark Wahlberg guy, but this one looks pretty good. What do you think?

First Look at Mark Wahlberg as ‘The Gambler’

Gambler 1

USA Today posted the first look at the upcoming Mark Wahlberg film, The Gambler.

The first thing you notice is how skinny Wahlberg is in the first images, He lost 60 pounds to play the part of a literary professor with a gambling problem who runs afoul of gangsters.

The film is a remake of the “1974 drama The Gambler starring James Caan as a professor whose gambling addiction is spiraling out of control. The new film features the original producers, Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff.”

John Goodman, Brie Larson and Jessica Lange also star in the Rupert Wyatt directed film.

Will Peter Berg be Directing the ‘Six Billion Dollar Man’ Starring Marky Mark Wahlberg

wpid-screenshot_2014-06-04-19-35-09-1.png

Apparently inflation is a bitch as ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’ will now be ‘The Six Billion Dollar Man’. It’s also being rumored that Marky Mark might be feeling the vibrations to a re-team with Peter Berg for the adaptation to the film adaptation of the 70’s hit TV show.

The Tracking Board has detailed the long history of this one from Kevin Smith’s script then Jim Carrey and Todd Philips’ comedic take that never got off the ground.

Berg certainly has his experience with big budget films and has worked with Wahlberg recently on ‘Lone Survivor’. It seems as though this one has a better traction and is more likely to get off the ground. We’ll have to wait and see if it ends up coming together.

Who’s Their Daddy? Will Ferrell and Marky Mark Team up Again for Daddy’s Home

image

The last time they teamed up we got The Other Guys, a pretty decent buddy comedy. It seems now that Ferrell and Wahlberg are close to teaming up again for Daddy’s Home. The plot revolves around Ferrell’ mild mannered radio executive trying to win over his new wife’s two children only to have their real freewheeling,  deadbeat, real father, (Wahlberg) show up to keep that from happening.

The script is written by Adam McKay, Chris Henchy, Etan Cohen and Brian Burns with Sean Anders and John Morris (Horrible Bosses 2) in talks to direct.

I’m not a big fan of Wahlberg generally. (blasphemy for me to say as a Boston Guy) That’s not to say I don’t sometimes like him in things, but he’s not generally that interesting an actor. But I’d be willing to him and Ferrell another shot. The premise sounds like there is a lot of laughs that can be mined fairly easy.
