Well, DC Comics and Warner Bros trickled some big news today and when I say trickle I mean they really let the cat out of the bag sloooowwwwly.
It has to be said that this announcement is exactly what is wrong with DC. Rather than come up with a way to announce all of this information in a way that’s exciting and fun, they dump it out there in a press release. You better believe that Marvel would have handled this with style and made a better show of it.
Let’s break down the slate of announced DC Films:
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 2016
Suicide Squad – 2016
Latino Review broke the news of the Suicide Squad a while back. Not much is known at this point except that Fury and End of Watch director David Ayer will be helming the film. The squad is rumored to consist of Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Vixen, Blockbuster, Multiplex, Jaculi, and Mindboggler. I’d expect this ragtag team to be DC’s attempt to copy Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
Wonder Woman – 2017
No word on the director or writer but we know that Gal Gadot will be our Wonder Woman and that her rumored origin will follow the one laid out in DC’s New 52 .
Justice League – 2017
Directed by Zack Snyder. Latino Review also reports that Brainiac will be the villain in the super-team’s first adventure.
The Flash – 2018
Surprisingly, one of the first pieces of big news today was that The Flash is heading to the big screen with Ezra Miller in the lead role. Ezra Miller???? I just hope he is not taking the role of Barry Allen. He may be a good Wally West but he’s not nearly tall enough or old enough looking to pull off a convincing Barry Allen. Yes, I know DC is thinking outside the box and while that may be good, you need to stick somewhere close to the comic when casting. It seems like the suits at WB have never read a comic book in their lives. To me it’s like casting Danny DeVito as the Green Lantern. Well….not really but you get my drift.
Aquaman – 2018
Speaking of casting the wrong people, it was officially confirmed today what we all knew that Jason Momoa will be playing Arthur Curry aka Aquaman and that film would be released in 2018 along with The Flash. Again, I don’t see it. Momoa would be a great Prince Namor. But Aquaman???
Shazam – 2019
The best casting news to come out of this was a month ago when Dwayne Johnson was tapped as Black Adam for the Shazam film. That is spot on casting if you ask me.
Justice League 2 – 2019
Like the first, Justice League 2 will be directed by Zack Snyder.
Cyborg – 2020
Ray Fisher had been rumored to be cast as Cyborg. Today’s announcement made it official.
Green Lantern – 2020
Looks like they’re giving Green Lantern another shot at the end of this cycle. I would imagine it’s safe to assume we’ll be seeing a new actor portraying GL after the failure of the Ryan Reynolds film in 2011. Hopefully nine years will be enough to air out the smell from the first film.
Man of Steel 2 & Batman – TBD
Man of Steel 2 was initially rumored to be released in May of 2018 and Batman in 2019. With today’s news we know that they are both happening, but when they’ll be released has not been determined.
Most of these upcoming films have partial casts and don’t even have first draft scripts. I think the key to these upcoming films is their foundation, they have to have an incredible script. So far, DC has yet to beat Marvel in that area. Hopefully they will put their thinking caps on and come up with good and intriguing stories to tell.
It’s more than a great script though, they MUST stay “somewhat faithful” to the source material. I’m not saying that you have to copy everything exactly but you don’t want to back yourself into a corner either. Arthur Curry is a blond surfer dude and Barry Allen is a tall thin crime scene investigator.
I fear this may all go so wrong that they will all end up being rebooted within the next 15 years. At this point they’re used to being able to flip a switch and spit out a new iteration once the previous stops working. Marvel Studios are executing amazing product and they’re doing it without that safety net. They’re so far in that they can’t just decide something isn’t working and flip a switch to reboot it. They’re all connected, so they have to just work with it and rebound well. I don’t know if DC has the constitution to play this game the way Marvel is.
I guess we will have to wait and see. I truly hope they can pull it off and not all be as dark as Man of Steel. I liked that movie but it did have its issues. Please note: along with the films announced, there will also be more Man of Steel and Batman films although they don’t have dates firmed up.
