John Candy’s Wild Night with Jack Nicholson

One bright spot during this Coronavirus situation has been Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart YouTube series where the casts of beloved films are brought back together via the magic of Zoom to discuss some of their most beloved films. Previously Gad hosted the casts of The Goonies and Back to the Future. Make sure you check them out if you haven’t yet.

Most recently Gad hosted the cast of Ron Howard’s Splash, bringing together Howard, Tom Hanks Daryl Hannah, Eugene Levy and others involved in making the 80’s comedy classic.

One person missing was the late, great, John Candy. But thanks to Howard we have a hilarious story that brought a smile to every viewers face watching from home about Candy crossing paths with the legend himself, Jack Nicholson.

“John, totally professional guy, but he’s late one day and he finally pulls up and rolls out of the car and he says, ‘Ron, I’m so sorry.’ I said, ‘It’s OK. You’re late, but we’ll get going.’ He said, ‘No, no, no. Look, I’m drunk. Here’s what happened, I’m telling you the truth: I’m at the bar and Jack Nicholson is at the bar. Jack Nicholson knew my name, Ron! And he starts buying me drinks. I [Candy] said, “But I’ve got to go shoot.” And he [Nicholson] said, “You’re going to be all right, kid. Don’t worry about it.” And he kept buying me drinks. I never went to bed, Ron. I never went to bed.'”

The scene in question was the racquetball scene where Candy hits himself in the face, a shot that, when he was finally able to shoot, he nailed on the first take.

If you haven’t seen it yet, the whole thing is worth checking out below.
