Most will agree that even after all these years The Exorcist is still one of the scariest films ever made. But now FOX is looking to give you the creeps on a week by week basis, as the network is working on a serialized adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s book – and they’ve picked a top notch director to open things up.

Deadline reports that Rupert Wyatt has stepped up to the plate to direct the first episode. Originally the job was going to be Sean Durkin’s, the director of Martha Marcy May Marlene. But he departed the project a while back (and is now set to helm the big screen version of Little House on the Prairie) and Fantastic Four screenwriter Jeremy Slater was recruited to rework the project.

The new series will be based on Blatty’s novel but is being said to bring a new twist on the classic material. It has been described as “as a propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession and confronting the face of true evil.”

Wyatt, the man behind the camera on Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the remake of The Gambler, was most recently attached to the next big X-Men franchise film Gambit. He left however due to “creative differences.” His work so far though has been quality stuff, so I’m interested to see what he does with The Exorcist.

Possession seems to be the hot button topic as of late. With this and Showtime’s Outcast, based on the Image / Skybound comic from writer Robert Kirkman that deals with a demonic possession of sorts, we’ll have our Halloween binge watching all mapped out for us.

No word was given yet on when this project will debut.
