Today it was announced that the second Star Wars standalone film will center around everyone’s favorite smuggler/scruffy nerf herder, Han Solo. Jump Street and Lego Movie directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord are onboard to direct with a script from Lawrence and Jon Kasdan. As with all the new Star Wars films, it will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy.

Miller and Lord said in a statement, “This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us, this is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

The Kasdan’s added, “We’re so excited to be working with Chris and Phil, who will bring a fresh new dimension to the ‘Star Wars’ universe. They’re two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”

Kennedy says, “It’s not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I’m excited to say we’ve found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han’s story.”

Josh Trank was initially attached to direct the second Star Wars Anthology film but dropped out suddenly after missing his appearance at Celebration this past April. It was initially reported that Boba Fett was to be the focus of Trank’s film, but there were persistent rumors that Han Solo might also appear in that film. It’s unclear if this is the same project he was working on, or if something changed after his departure. THR reports that Trank’s film, “rumored to be an origin story of the intergalactic bounty hunter Boba Fett, is still searching for a director.”

The first Star Wars Anthology film, Rogue One, directed by Gareth Edwards has just started shooting and is set to be released on December 16, 2016. The film will star Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed and Sam Clafin.

All we know for sure is that it will be a younger Han. Beyond that it’s anyone’s guess. I’m sure Miller and Lord will add some humor, a whole ton of action and cool Easter Eggs to the mix. I am excited that Lawrence Kasdan is writing, as he added so many different dimensions to the character for The Empire Strikes Back and out of anyone he probably knows how to write Han Solo the best.

I’d personally love to see them pull in pieces of the Extended Universe like when Han, training to be an Imperial pilot disregards his Commander’s orders and saves Chewbacca from slavery.
