Universal doesn’t seem to want to leave anything to chance for its planned relaunch of its monsters universe.

Recently it was announced that Tom Cruise had signed to battle The Mummy in the first Universal Monsters installment and now it’s been announced that Johnny Depp has signed on to bring his particular brand of strange to The Invisible Man.

Claude Rains originally brought Dr. Jack Griffin to life, (and transparency) as a scientist who unlocks the key to invisibility, not realizing that the breakthrough would also unravel his sanity, in one of his first film roles back in 1933. That film was directed by James Whale, the man behind other Universal classics Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein and The Old Dark House (one of my favorite films of all-time).

The Hollywood Reporter also revealed that the updated version of The Invisible Man currently has no director, but it’s being written by Ed Solomon. Solomon is no stranger to making people disappear, having penned Now You See Me, or with the fantastic, having also written Men in Black.

There’s no word on a release date, but now that this news is out there it probably won’t be long before more is announced.
