Another Chance to Release the Beast With a Third ‘Purge’

James DeMonaco has only one question for us – Can we survive The Purge for a third time? We’ll get to answer that question as the writer and director of the first two Purge films has been greenlit to start production on a tertiary installment of the survival horror franchise. (We can call it a franchise, right? Three films or more equals franchise?)

It’s not shocking that this happened. The first film, The Purge, was a runaway success, costing only $3 million to make and raking in over 11 times that in its opening weekend alone!! Without a thought a sequel was given the go ahead. With a budget of $9 million, The Purge: Anarchy has brought in a little over $100 million domestically and internationally this summer. Studios love when movies cost them little to make and they rake in big bucks. So it comes as no surprise that we’ll get a third shot at Purging sometime in the near future.

The first film showed us the story of a well to do suburban family with a substantial amount of security and how even they weren’t immune to the effects of the Purge. With Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady giving stellar performances, this movie was breath of fresh air in the Home Invasion genre. The second installment, headlined by an angry yet calculating Frank Grillo managed to show us what we’d been asking about since the end of the first film – What happens to those without a fancy security system to protect them? I love how two films in the same universe can depict two different types of movies (home invasion and urban survival) and still ring true to the core concept of the basic story.

While James DeMonaco has been slated as the writer there has been no director confirmed as of yet. I say let the man direct the third one. If it isn’t broke, why fix it? I’d love to see DeMonaco allowed to fully realize another chapter in this universe, whether it be a sequel or a prequel. Even though the events of the last film lay the groundwork for a third and final chapter I’d love to see a prequel. To show us the evolution of the Purge and how we came to be the society depicted in these films would be a nice little breather before we go ahead and finish off the universe.

I am a huge fan of the Purge series, as can be seen in my review of The Purge: Anarchy right here on Indierevolver. No matter what direction this series goes in, I’m along for the ride.
